Product Photos
Taking product photos on velvet at a high resolution will always show dust. No matter how much tape and lint roller you use, there will still be some dust. Sometimes it will even look like you grabbed a handful of dryer lint to shoot your pictures on! Cheap velvet looks even cheaper in high resolution.
Pets and Photos
If you have pets, plan on editing out their hairs in your photos. They have a way of getting everywhere!
Dealing with Difficult Customers
There are some senile old people out there, just like our grandparents. They may not understand how to shop online or leave feedback that makes sense. Heck sometimes I think they don't even have recollection of doing so. Don't take it personally. Just cancel their future orders and move on.
Be Skeptical of Information
Just because someone online is selling the same thing you are researching, it doesn't mean they have accurate information. Some people have no idea what they have. So, use common sense when pricing your items. Look at the other items they are selling. How many actual sales have they had?
Trust Your Gut
You will always have those one or two items that your gut tells you are worth more than you think. Trust your instincts and don't undervalue them. I re-research those items every so often. Eventually I am going to figure it out!
Join a Community
Learning about vintage jewelry takes time because there is so much of it out there. Join a Facebook group or a vintage jewelry forum to learn from others. I recommend a group called Texas Gals Jewelry Lovers on Facebook, even if you're not from Texas. Don't expect others to answer all your questions, though. Do your own research first and save the really puzzling pieces for the group. Meanwhile, read other people's posts and you'll be surprised how much you can learn about your future items. You be the active catalyst in your own vintage jewelry education. When I first started, I never imagined I would know what I know now. Much of it comes second nature. It will happen for you too. But not if poor Sally is doing all the work for you.
In Summary
Not only is vintage jewelry fun to wear, it is equally fun to buy, sell and yes even research!
